Question

God, how can I come near to you as your kid today?

Here's the episode transcript

Hey friends, today's episode is short, sweet, and to the point because sometimes the things that God wants to talk with us about are really just reminding us of what he's already told us and inviting us to experience that or to engage with him in a greater measure. So today we're talking about the ways that God sees us and embracing the reality that God sees us as his children. That he's our good father, that we are his kids, and that we get to approach him with that awareness. And so, I'm going to read three different passages of scripture for us. I'll begin with John 1:12-13.

"But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. Who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God."

Matthew 7:7-11,

"Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and it will be open to you. For everyone who asks, receives. And the one who seeks, finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent. If you, then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"

And then Luke 18:15-17, Jesus is engaging with the people, and in verse 15 it says,

"Now they were bringing even infants to him (Jesus) that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to him, saying, "let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.""

I don't often think about how I can come to God as a child. I'm a parent myself and so I often think about caring for kids. I'm a leader and I'm in ministry, and so I think about how I can care for those around me. I talk with God about ways that he wants to develop me or or minister through me or what he's doing in the world, or ways that he wants to teach me and transform me, and those are all good things, and they're not entirely separate from being God's child, but in today's episode, the invitation that I believe we have from God is to intentionally talk with him about what it's like to come as his kids; those who can boldly come to the throne of grace with confidence because we know that we're his children. With this awareness of me as God's child and of you as God's child, that he says, "let them come".

Today, he's inviting us, "Come, come to me, come receive the kingdom like a child". And so, here's our question.

God, how can I come near to you as your kid today?

Explore with him what this would look like because his answers can vary for all of us. You are his kid, and he invites you to draw near.

I wonder what he has in store for you today. Have a good talk.
