Question
God, what can I do about this weariness?
Here's the episode transcript
Hey friend, are you feeling weary today? I know there's a lot of fun things in the summer, but there's also a good amount of fatigue and weariness that can set in. We're talking with God about that today and finding out what he would have us do with any of that weariness that you may be experiencing.
Continuing in this series of sowing seeds, and one of the places that this idea really started from was a conversation I was having with a friend, and she was talking about planting little seeds along the way so that they can grow in due season.
And I started talking with God about that concept and looking at where we see that in the word and how we can see that experienced in our own lives. Scripture is full of examples of seeds that are growing and blooming into harvest. And so, most of my words for you in this episode today are really coming from scripture because, I can't say it any better than that.
In Galatians 6:7, it says,
"Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows."
And then continuing in verse 9, it says,
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
If you find yourself in a season or even just a day of weariness and you feel tired at the good that you are working toward. The good, you're sowing into your family and your loved ones. The good that you're sowing into your work and your ministry, do not give up. You will reap what you're sowing.
Oftentimes we don't get to see all of the beginning stages of growth. If you think about any time, you've done a gardening project, and I am, I am horrible at making actual plants grow. I killed bamboo one time, and I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be able to do that. But anyway, I have memories of waiting for little seeds to sprout and you're waiting and you're waiting and you're watering and you're making sure it's getting sunlight. And sometimes it can feel like, is this thing ever going to actually spring into a growing thing? And then all of a sudden, the shoot springs out of the ground.
You might find yourself in a season like that, and scripture tells us: don't give up at the proper time, you will reap a harvest.
The passage that I'm focusing on for us today is Hebrews 12. And while it doesn't speak specifically to this concept of seeds or gardening, you will see why I'm talking about it.
I'll read for us starting in verse Hebrews 12:1-3. It says,
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted."
Endurance doesn't mean we never feel weak or weary, but that we persist even when we do. And we don't have enough time to dive into all of the things here, but one of the aspects that jumped out at me was how Jesus endured such hostility from sinners.
Before our kids come to receive salvation in Jesus, they are fully living out their sinful nature. And then even as those, us included, who receive salvation, we are learning to live according to life in the spirit, and we are learning to put to death all that is contrary within us. But that weariness that we can have, especially in times of the year like this, sometimes that can feel like enduring hostility from sinners.
If our kids are learning what it means to be a follower of Christ by our example, I want to walk with endurance. I don't want to grow weary when it seems like the lessons that I'm trying to teach my kids or the habits that I'm putting in place, or even the spiritual disciplines and formation that I'm trying to grow in, seems to take longer than I would like it to.
Instead, I want to be someone who endures. I want to be someone who runs the race with perseverance. And so, we're going to bring this into a conversation with God today to see what he would have each of us do with it. Here's our question:
God, what can I do about this weariness?
Maybe he'll exhort you to persevere. Maybe he'll show you a way that you've picked up a burden that you don't need to carry or reveal an area of sin that might be clinging to you and weighing you down. Maybe he wants to show you a way that you can be refreshed and poured back into, or to show you how some of the seeds that you've been planting are already starting to show growth. Whatever that is for you, I know God wants to talk with you about it, and so here's that question one more time:
God, what can I do about this weariness?
Have a good talk.
