Question
God, in the past I've struggled with fear. What do I get to do differently, what power can I receive from you?
Here's the episode transcript
Oftentimes my limiting beliefs have circled back around to a perspective of fear. And then I read scripture like Psalms 27:1 that says,
"The Lord is my light and my salvation. So why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress protecting me from danger. So why should I tremble?"
But as soon as I look at territory I want to take, something new I want to attempt, even how I care for my family, and the desires that I have for my well-being and for my family's well-being, I have struggled with fear. And it was a regular tug of war. I would feel like I made progress, overcoming fear, and then fell back into these fear cycles where fear-filled thoughts would rule in my mind.
I could see all of these ways that something bad could happen. And so I almost started anticipating something bad to happen. And that was a significant belief that was also an enemy attack. Because fear is a spirit. The Bible says that God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. (That's 2 Timothy 1:7.) I was aligning myself with an enemy attack when instead bringing it into the light took away that fear because shadows can feel really looming in the darkness, but when exposed to light, they just dissipate.
Every time we bring fear into the light, we get to hear what God would have to say about it. We don't have to limit ourselves only to our perspective or to the perspectives that we've had before, but we get to receive fresh insight from God based on what he sees, our all-knowing, all powerful, loving, good Father. We get to hear from him about what he has to say about it.
So many of these fears that I had were actually insignificant when I brought them into the light and asked God to speak to them…when I brought them into the light of what the Bible said about who God is and who I am as his child and about his care for me.
This concept reminds me of those moments I had in my childhood where I'd wake up in the middle of the night and it would look like a monster or something creepy was looming in the corner of my room, but as soon as I flipped on that light switch, I could see it was a sweatshirt that was draped oddly over a chair, or it was that toy that I had left on my dresser. Sometimes all we need to be able to see clearly and remove that fear causing concern is the light of God.
And so as we close out this episode, we're going to ask him to share with us about what he sees.
And so here's our question:
God, in the past, I've struggled with fear. What do I get to do differently, what power can I receive from you?
I'm guessing that as you bring this question to God, it's going to bring about some follow up questions. And so just keep talking with God, wherever that conversation goes. If he brings up other things to talk about or as his responses come back to you, if that prompts other questions in your heart or mind, ask him to speak to it.
Have a good talk.
