Tools for Exploring the Bible

Explore the Bible: A guided journey through understanding scripture as god intended

Thanks for reading my Explore the Bible guide. As promised here's a list of additional resources that can help you on this adventure with God.

We all get turned around sometimes as we read the Bible. I still do sometimes.

As a refresher, here are eight common ways you may get turned around:

  1. Imagine your town as their town.
  2. Misjudge the size of the river.
  3. Always learning more about the bridge.
  4. Don’t know there’s a map, or forget to reference it.
  5. Bypass wonder.
  6. Don’t seek application for your own town.
  7. Skip the journey altogether.
  8. Journey alone.

Some Resources that Can help

  • Study Bibles | For a deeper dive into the Word, take a look at a study Bible. Many of these will have introductions to each Biblical book, commentary notes at the bottom of pages, and even concordances in the back to help you explore the original language. For example, this Key Word Study Bible and this Student Study Bible
  • Free Bible Websites | If you're interested in learning more about the original language and translations used, Blue Letter Bible has a free search with the Strongs Concordance included. Also Bible Gateway has some free study tools and commentaries.
  • The Story of the Bible from Bible Project | I appreciate the work of the Bible Project. This 5 minute video walks you through the unified story of the Bible and they have a TON of other videos to help you explore God's word, including topical studies, introductions to various books of the Bible, and literary styles used in Scripture. • The Jesus Storybook Bible | This is an especially great resource if you have young kids. My boys love this storybook Bible and I enjoy reading it, too. While not a Bible translation, (more of a story-retelling) Sally Lloyd-Jones does a beautiful job of putting God and His story on display. The Jesus Storybook Bible on Amazon

Grasping God's Word by J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays

I first learned the foundational framework of the “interpretive journey” from Grasping God’s Word by J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hays. I’m so grateful for their work and you can learn more about their book here.
